not legally and being stuck on sprint 3g forever would be a terrible waste.

oh absolutely not, sprint only accepts devices that are in their database (as in if it doenst have a sprint logo they wont activate it).
Sorry, Sprint wont activate an LG Spirit from MetroPCS. A possible option - your friend could sell the phone and then use the money to buy a Sprint phone.
