line transfer: existing SIM reqd?

Is an existing SIM card needed on the smartphone line when doing the purchase on a dumb phone line and re-register the phone on an existing unlimited line?

the latest accounts of doing this that I've read have people transferring their SIM from their existing phone to the new phone, but my existing phone on the unlimited line is a CDMA/pre-SIM phone.

before I attempt this I just want to make sure that I'll be able to register the phone on the unlimited line and the SIM card in the phone won't cause me any issues.

You will need a SIM from Verizon as you need one programmed for your line. I can't imagine it being more complicated than "I got a different phone that needs a SIM card. Can you guys make one for me?". Which I'm sure they'll gladly do, since people somehow manage to lose/break them all the time. Something that takes maybe a couple minutes to do.
