You should read the e-mail correspondences between Torvalds and Andy Tanenbaum (who wrote Minix)! I believe it's been published in book form.

Nobody ever claimed that the Linux community was going to be some kind of zoned-out stoner fest...

I'm not surprised at RMS's comments about Ubuntu after hearing him speak at A BCS lecture last week. Although I agree with his basic standpoint, The Amazon stuff in Ubuntu is easily disabled, but I doubt that would satisfy him. He has a very narrow definition of freedom, and seems to think that anything else is evil.
