little fed up with ATT

Knowing my friends get unlimited everything for between $80 and $100, it drives me bonkers to have to deal the ATT's all or nothing pricing.

Sooooooo, that brings me to my question: Has anyone had experience with an internet/ web based texting app? If possible I would drop my texting plan and go with only data, saving $20 month (plus taxes and fees... /sigh.)

Google Voice is wonderful. Just train your friends and family to only text you on your new number. If they can't handle 2 different numbers for you, set it so that your Google Voice # forwards to your cell.

I've even won over iPhone users to start using Google Voice.

I actually already use google voice. I'll have to dig into it a little deeper... and how cool will it be when we get 2.2 and can voice-text?

Google Voice didn't do anything for me. If I had 2.2 I'd use Skype and lower my minute plan. To me, $20 isn't worth worrying about.

AT&T uses simple economics for pricing. If people will pay, they'll charge.

What problems did you have with it?

For me, it saved $15/month, which basically reduced my bill by 1/5th for the amount of services I have now. That's not insignificant. Plus, it gives me visual voicemail and ability to access my voicemails and texts from a PC if I happen to not be by my phone. And when I had to switch to a loaner phone, all my pending text messages were right there once I reloaded Google Voice.

For most people, that's a significant percentage of their bill.

Agreed... and if people don't pay, maybe they'll get the hint that their pricing is too high. ;) By not paying for text service and taking my texting "business" elsewhere, I'm voting with my wallet.

^^^ This. Besides the fact that SMS costs them virtually nothing, US customers are already being extorted for their cellular service. Further, ATT knowingly and willfully got rid of their unlimited data and texting plans, a move to me says "*&$* off" to their customers.

I am admittedly a tight-wad, but especially so when I know I'm being raked over the coals.

Perhaps you could be a little more specific about what Google Voice didn't do for you?

GV is a forwarding service. VOIP is more of what I wanted. I found a few online with Android apps to host their service but I'm undecided right now on what I want to use. If I dialed through GV my cell # wouldn't show on the other end, unless I did something wrong.

I also agree that it was a low blow that the companies nixed their unlimited plans. But they all do just about the same thing.

Actually, Google Voice does more than forward. You can use it to call directly from your computer or from your phone, and text directly as well. Just install the Google Voice app and you can do all your texting and VOIP calls through it. Cheap International calling and free texting (with your data plan of course)

If it would show my number when I call someone that would be a plus. I may go back and work with it, but Skype did exactly what I wanted. I just need Froyo. :)
