Help Live Wallpaper

Hi,
Hoping someone can help me. I've just got a galaxy portal and I'm struggling to do what I want on it. I've been trying to install some live wallpaper but once I've downloaded it I don't know how to make it work.....do I need to install something else to make it work?
Thanks
Tfq

Android 2.1 installed or 1.5?

I think only Vs 2.1 will use live wallpaper..

I'm trying to upgrade my 'new' Portal to 2.1, presently. :D

To confirm your firmware.

About Phone.

We want to know

Firmware version
Baseband version
Kernel version
Build number

Yep your 2.1. You just need to root your phone, and install LiveWallpapers.

Place these as follows:-

Paths as follows:-

/system/app
LiveWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk

/system/lib
libRS.so
librs_jni.so

Your phone runs an operating system, similar to the way a PC runs an operating system. Your phone has graphics, sound, storage and keyboard again just like a PC.

The operating system your phone runs is called Android, which is in turn based on Linux.

To have total control over Android you need to have the right permission to change things. To change anything you want is called having Administrator rights. The Administrator's name on Linux, (and hence on Android) is called the root user.

Your phone provider does not give you administrator rights on your phone. But you can install a patch/hack/update that gives you administrator rights. To cut a long story short, we use the term root access, or just root for short. So you need to install this patch/hack/update that will give you root access.

The Paths refer to where to install the files on the phone. On your computer you know what C:\ or C:\Windows etc are.

In linux you don't have C: you just have the \

So the paths above refer to where on your phone to install the LiveWallpapers.

Kinda understanding that but still not understanding what to do......

/system/app
LiveWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk

/system/lib
libRS.so
librs_jni.so

..........do I type this into my phone somewhere? Sorry I realise I probably sound completely stupid but I have no understanding of these new fan-dangled contraptions at all

He means;

Make sure this path exists in your phone or sd card (you can plug your sd card into your pc if you have a micro sd card > sd card adapter) or plug your phone into your pc via usb cable, and drag down the notifications screen from the top of your phone screen, from there, select the 'USB CONNECTED' button and 'MOUNT' the SD Card, from there, on your pc you should get an auto play window pop up, just select VIEW FILES IN FOLDER, in this new window, you will see the files contained on the SD CARD, and can check to see if you can find / need to create the specified folders/files.
/system/app

If you find that folder then put these / check these files exist in that folder

LiveWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk

And the same principle for the next path and set of files.

Hope this helps

I cant say for sure, the best thing to do (in my opinion) would be to put your micro sd card into an adapter and into your pc. Then you can use it like you would a flash drive, and as long as you make the folders needed, and call them the right names, and they include the right files, then you should be ok to rock and roll. I doubt you will mess your phone up though.

I have not 'rooted' my phone, but I have updated it to 2.1 - as you need a rooted phone to have live wallpapers, it should be obvious that i have not done anything to have live wallpapers either.

If you know how to;

download a file
copy it to your SD card
get your phone into download mode
load odin
flash your phone to update the software/firmware
make a new folder on your pc/mac with the name you specify

Then in all honesty, you should have no trouble at all, you just need to read the instructions carefully, and try to get as much info as you can (I try to give as detailed instructions/answers to questions as i can, but I still miss some things.)

One question, have you updated your phone to 2.1 yet, or was it already on 2.1 when you got it?

Ok that makes it sound far less scary.

If you're getting the idea I'm not appreciating the help you're giving me, let me just say I really am, but this is a new phone and I can not afford to replace it if I break it, so I just want to be positive I know what I'm doing.

2.1 was already installed when I bought it.

Aha, ok, I was just thinking that if you had upgraded to 2.1 yourself, the. the process is near enough the same.

Maybe there is a clip on youtube that you can watch? Again, you may pick up on something that some one forgot to mention in a written tutorial.

I will check back later, and try to help further if I can.

My friend has just got one of these, and it is definitely 2.1, has google maps navigation, etc. Why don't live wallpapers work though? I didn't have to root my desire for them to work (it even had some included), so why does this one not do them without rooting?

Simple, HTC include this option, Samsung don't. It's not something that interests me enough to 'root' the phone. The upgrade to 2.1 was something I wanted tho' so I did do that.

Rooting might not be worth it just for the wallpaper, but it's useful for some for what they want to do
