Loading Apps/Android Market/Music/ et al

I'm hoping to get an Android Phone soon, moving from WinMO. So I'm used to being able to sync music from Windows Media Player, or a third party app such as J River Media. And I'm used to being able to browse my files, and save CAB files to a sepcific directory on my memory card. And I have a program that will reinstall the appls I select as default apps whenever I do a hard reset.

From some of the threads I've been browsing here, I have become a bit confused about how this process works wiht Android. I get the impression that I have to hook up to the Android Market with the phone, (at least if I want a complete view of apps availabe) and download them that way., as opposed to being able to download ot my PC and save there, copy to a 'cab folder' (that is, Android's equivalent).

I've seen some posts that give me the impression that reinstalling apps after a hard reset is not straight forward. Have to download again, for example, which I presume means no capability or app available to auto reinstall apps. Makes hard resets much worse thant the old 'outdated' WinMO.

I saw one post by someone that was having difficulty re-downloading all their previous apps. One of the suggestions was "Browse the market, you'll eventually remember all your apps". :eek:

On one thread I saw something about ringtones get added to the music (music app just scans the card for ALL audio files or something like that), which means if I have an app that plays random music (I presume/hope there is a way to do that), so then all of a sudden you are playing your ringtones while listening to music. Also re: music, some having problems with tags downloading.

Am I just reading the wrong threads or misinterpreting things?

Interested in your comments. If there is a "getting started" set of threads or site, maybe you can point me to that.

Irrespective of how this topic goes, I am anxious to get the new Samsung from AT&T.
 
When you get your new phone there will be an android market icon on the phone,you can view all of the available apps there and also all of the apps you have downloaded are on there in the download section.

Also there is a website called appbrain.com where you can also view all the apps on the android market.Also if you sign up to the site (using your gmail account) and download the appbrain app you can then sync your downloaded apps and also manage them,eg install,update or reinstall all of your apps.

One app you should download first of all is a file manager like Astro file manager,using that you can create new folders on your sd card eg a music folder and a ring tone folder so that your music player only plays your music.

Thanks. It sure does. Hopefully this can be a thread to give us noobs a good start. Of course, maybe when I get the phone, a lot of that info will come with it...but that would be quite surprising.:D

Hi ewingr, I wanted to stop by and answer a few of your questions here regarding the Android phone system. I do agree with the other posts, and would also add, to backup all of your apps so that you can possibly reinstall them without having to redownload them, you can use an app called - AppManager. As far as accessing your files from the phone or sd card, there is an called - AndExplorer which allows you to do just that. Lastly, as far as the ringtone issue, you can use pretty much any music app, except for the android default one, which will allow you to play your songs by genre, album, artist, etc. doing this will eliminate your music player accidentally playing the ringtones that are on the phone. Also, just so you are aware, all ringtone files get saved to a folder on the sd card named - My Ringtones, at least that how things are setup on my phone. See, just like the commercials point out, "there's an app for that(sorry to sound like Apple/iPhone). By the way, all of the apps mentioned above, are absolutely free in the "Market". And also, there is no more need to sync your phone using a usb cable to the pc(that's old school). Everything on the Android phone is synced wirelessly/OTA(over the air), except most of the time the music files, but even they have an app for that now - ZumoDrive.

I just happened to think that when I first get this phone, I can imagine trying to intall all kinds of apps, try them, find a better one, etc., and want to uninstall.

Of course in the Windows world (and maybe the WinMo world too then) uninstalling leaves trash around, and registry bloat etc.

Anything like that to be concerned about when installing and uninstalling Android apps?
