Help Location Services and Nav Question

radjxf

Newbie
I'll apologize in advance, but I'm a smartphone newb, so here goes:

Can someone explain to me the locations settings? Why there are 3 options and which one(s) should I have turned on?

I ask as I've set some smart settings, to have my phone get on my work wifi when at work, and home wifi when home.

Lately, it's not been working. However, this was after I tried to use the native navigation app. When I tried to get the nav app to open, it kept directing me to the location settings page. So like an idiot, I kept checking and unchecking location settings, etc. until I could get the damn nav app to work. I think this may be the root of my wifi problems as well.

Thanks in advance.

Are you refering to these?

1. Google location services
2. stand alone location services
3. VZW location services

Good question, I usually have the google location service checked, but not sure that is the best option. Will wait for a response from another member.

I believe the standard (non verizon) set of options are standalone (ala gps) and google location services (wifi and carrier radio).

Naturally verizon saw how google was making money off this service so they wanted in the game (ala verizoin location service) - note the recent mailing verizion has sent suggestion they will now be serving location targeted ads (Verizon Welcomes Users To The Opt-Out, Ad-Targeting Party | TechCrunch).

Now things get a bit trickly. I would presume verizon has a better understanding of the location of their towers than google but verizon (to my eyes) have not been horribly clever in their programming (at least for other services).

I am unaware of any actual study to measure the accuracy of the two services so in that regards I cannot comment further.

What I can say is I use a few of google services (ala maps) and none of verizon's services so I see a reason to enable google location service and I have absolutely no reason (and no desire) to enable verizon location service (and would go so far as to remove it from the phone if possible - i.e, I rather not share my location with any corporation but in google's case - the conveniences outweigh the negative).

Note that quite a bit of the above is speculation (with a tint of my overall distaste for verizon - such as backup sync that cannot be disabled or turned off once enabled).
