Help Lock screen won't keep wallpaper

MrsBFE

Lurker
Android 10, LG G8 ThinQ, Nova Launcher, no third-party wallpaper app.

I've had the same picture on my Lock Screen for a long time. It just recently started changing to a solid background (Home Screen doesn't change), but the picture comes back when I restart the phone.
I've tried setting it from Gallery, Google Photo, System Settings, and directly from a hard press on the home screen. I've tried setting both Lock Screen and Home Screen with the same wallpaper, and just Lock Screen. I see a lot of people have the same problem, but no solution. Can someone help with this?

Welcome to Android Forums, MrsBFE! :)
Android 10, LG G8 ThinQ, Nova Launcher, no third-party wallpaper app.
Since you're using Nova, this should be controlled/set by it. [At least it is with my launcher, ADW, though I can also use System Settings.] When you set it via Nova, does it work at all?

Have you added anything new [like an app] around the time this started, or was your phone updated?

I can change the icons with Nova, but I don't see a way to set the wallpaper other than by pressing on the home screen to set the wallpaper. A choice of Nova or the system comes up then. I've set it both with Nova and the system settings with the same result. I can't remember if the phone was updated, is that something I can check? I was playing around with the AOD settings, but ended up with it back to how I originally had it. The only thing new is that I now have a Lenovo Android tablet. I was wondering if somehow that had something to do with it because I loaded Nova on that as well. I tried making the wallpapers the same, but that didn't help. I don't use the tablet enough to give it time to change. I've been trying to pay close attention to the apps I use to see if the the picture disappearing coincided with an app, and I've also used a wallpaper already in the system instead of one of my own pictures. It's very puzzling.

I'd like to help you more, but I'm not a Nova user as, after trying it, I preferred ADW, and just don't know enough about its guts to help out.

All I can say for sure is that with ADW, setting my wallpapers is a straightforward, basic feature. Long-pressing on a home screen brings up wallpapers, and other settings:

Since I've been using ADW [forever!], this is the only method I've used for setting wallpapers [that I can recall]. So my best guess is to do the following:

- in System Settings, find Nova and delete its cache

- try setting your wallpapers; if the problem recurs...

- go back to System Settings and delete Nova's cache and data [you'll lose your settings--you might want to take a backup before deleting its data]

- try again

- no luck? Repeat the last step, then also 'force close'

- try again [you'll be prompted for which launcher to use]

Obviously, with each step you're going to have to wait and see if the problem persists.

You should also power off your phone, leave it off for a few seconds, and see if that helps.

If you're still having the problem, I'll page some of my Nova buddies and see if they can help!

Thank you, I'll give those things a try. I'm thinking though it may have nothing to do with Nova since I've seen a variety of devices and launchers being mentioned.

I did try those steps, but it still happened. I'm wondering if there was an update that affected things. Meanwhile, I'll give ADW a try. Thank you for trying to help.

You're welcome. I wish I could've helped more.

Here's the link for the current version of ADW Launcher. Like Nova, its options and features are many, but don't get overwhelmed! Just do one thing at a time, see how you like it, drop in on my thread about some things you can do with it, and ask any questions you may have.

If your problem persists, we need to move to plan B...though I have no clue what that will be!

I found the solution! I did a more general search on wallpaper problems and found this: Settings>Apps, then tap Menu>Reset App Preferences. That tells me that sometime over the last couple weeks I changed or added an app that caused a problem with the wallpaper settings.

You're welcome. I wish I could've helped more.

Somewhere in your settings there should/could be a setting when choosing a wallpaper as to when you want it to appear.

For example, on one of my devices, the wallpaper only appears on the lockscreen, and not during normal use.

Thank you. Yes that's how it was set, and that's the one that's disappearing. Right now, I'm deleting files, in case memory might be an issue. It's very frustrating to see multiple instances of this problem back to 2013 with no solution.
