Lock up on lock screen?

Just got Note 8 about 3 weeks ago. When it does auto lock screen, it will not unlock and has to be rebooted. Any advice on how to fix?

What unlock method are you using? Fingerprint, PIN, password, etc. Does it prompt you to unlock, not provide a prompt, not turn on at all, or what?

Basically can you describe exactly what happens, because we only know what you tell us?

Also you say when it times out - so is it different if you turn the screen off yourself, or is it just that the unlock doesn't work full stop? Have you got it set to lock the moment the screen turns off, or after some delay?

screen is set to timeout at 2 min of no activity. when that happens, the phone turns off. must power phone back on to use.

swipe
phone powers off if screen times out or if you put screen to sleep.
not set to lock

(Sorry - relaying from husband)

Sorry to ask dumb questions but i dont want us to chase out tails here.

So this has happened since day one of you getting the device? Or was it from a recent change?

Sounds like its working fine, you may have an aggressive time out setting.

To test, disable the time out feature (or increase it) and see if that cures the issue. If it does, then you need too readjust your settings.

OK, that is weird. And you are sure it's powering down, rather than the screen not waking again? It's easy to tell: if it was just the screen you'd stlll hear notifications, and to restart it you'd have to hold the power key down for more than the couple of seconds you need if it has shut down.

To be honest I've never heard of this before. It may be a faulty device, so making sure it's backed-up in case you need to replace it is probably sensible. I'm hoping someone will come along with some other ideas, because all I can think of is a few very generic things to try (which are in my opinion unlikely to work).

First thing, has it always done this since it was new, or did it start at some point?

You could try booting into safe mode: this requires rebooting, then pressing the "volume down" key when you see the words "Galaxy Note 8" on the screen and keeping it pressed until you see the words "safe mode" in the bottom-left corner. What this does is disable all user-installed apps temporarily, so if it works normally in this state it's one of your apps that's causing it (then it's a matter of working out which).

You could try booting into recovery mode. Rather than type instructions, just follow this link (with pictures). I'd do it with the hardware buttons and ignore the other stuff, which requires installing software on a computer. When in recovery you should have an option to wipe the system cache (along with other options). This really doesn't sound like the sort of thing that a cache wipe will fix, but as long as you only wipe cache you lose nothing and there's a very remote chance.

If all else fails, and especially if this wasn't this way from the start, you could back up and do a factory reset. If you get to the point where it's that or replace it then you've nothing to lose by trying this.

If the problem was there after a reset without restoring the account then faulty device does seem most likely.

Sadly, it happens: every company produces a few dud devices.

The other strange thing for me.
It seems like after a reboot you can log in? Only when the screen blanks out again you get the issue?

If so are you, after a reset accepting any of the options to encrypt the storage or add secure folder etc?

Another silly question but have you checked your Note 8 is genuine. There are a couple of convincing fakes. as you seem to have limited access to the device I would let you choose but checking the EMEI number is usually the best quick method. I think Samsung have a page as well but from the sites I have seen it is all country specific. Try searching: samsung check my Note 8 is not fake

Chances are it isn't but I found confirming it peace of mind.
