Long First Charge

So after running out the Pre Charge yesterday, I charged my handset today for the first time and it took from 1pm till 8pm to charge from 0% to 100%, is this unusually ( Phone was switched off during this )?

With older battery chemistry, it used to be that the battery would eventually form a habit of the range you used it, so it was good to drain it from time to time. With modern lithium ion batteries, you never want it fully charged or discharged, as it damages the battery and degrades the usable charge capacity.

Usually there's a software buffer to keep the battery from fully charging (despite what your readout says), and there might also be a buffer at the bottom of the charge window, but if the phone is shutting off suddenly, there might not be. I would caution against fully discharging the battery if at all possible (outside of emergency situations, of course).

Edit: The good news is that phone batteries are very cheap, and if you've damaged your battery and are getting crappy usage out of it, it's pretty easy to replace with the GS5.

do you unplug your charger at once, if the 100% notification full charge appears? or you let it charge still for some minutes? ?

The S5 charger will taper off the charge to a trickle maintenance charge once at 100%

leave it on forever if you want, won't hurt a thing, the phone will simply use the charger's power instead of the battery's power.

I have a trucker friend who never takes his phones off of charge. they are always plugged in.

That seems extremly long for a charge. I have done a 30% to full charge in about an hour with the power cable pluged into a DC outlet. It obviously takes longer through a USB port.

I have read some articles that it's "ok" to let your batt go 0 percent to refresh it.. tried this on my s2 and s4.. no groundbreaking results experienced... might try this again on s5..

LI-ion don't like being run down to flat zero.
suggest you use about 10% for the bottom floor and recharge it from there.

On the other hand, Li-ion does not have a memory like the old Nicad batteries.

So, you can recharge it at any point and it is happy.....

Mine did the same thing the first time I charged it but after that it charges at a normal pace now. No issues.

Im assuming that during the first charge your google account might have been synchronizing your accounts which could have contributed to the long first charge. If you put an old sd card with photos it will always upload the files to your google photos account. I always kill those type of backups. I only sync contacts and app data, but nothing personal like photos.
