I've been with VM with a dumb-phone (PAYG/20cents/min) since 2003. Since I make VERY few actual phone calls, but desperately need on-the-go internet access, I was VERY impressed with the $25/mo plan with VM. Since I DO NOT do phone contracts (or tv for that matter), it was down to Boost, VM, or Cricket. It came down to VM's $25/mo, where none of the no-contract carriers were even close to VM's $25/mo. Now I understand that's going to $35/mo, which is STILL a fantastic deal, even if they don't grandfather us old-timers.. I got a really great price on a Samsung Intercept on eBay, though it was a Sprint-labeled unit, I assumed I could "shoehorn" it onto VM.. Alas, I learned its not so easy.. So I resold it on eBay for a fair amount more than I paid for it, and bought a VM-branded one for essentially what I got for the Sprint one. I use perhaps 10-15 min/mo of actual talk minutes, but wanted a smart-phone for on-the-go internet access. I do web-development and have a bunch of servers I admin, and have gotten VERY tired of having to carry the laptop EVERYWHERE and hit a McDonalds or Starbucks when I need to access any of the servers.. The ssh and remote desktop apps for android work VERY well for what I need. The only problem I'm still facing is getting the unit rooted and getting the OpenVPN client working on it.
