Looking for a better audio player

One of the main uses I have for my android device is playing podcasts while I'm driving. 99% of the time, these podcasts are sitting in my dropbox in a folder. I click the button in the Dropbox app so the files are stored locally, then I usually just click on them and the built-in Android audio player starts up.

However, this default audio player doesn't have a time/remaining readout on it, so I've been searching for a better audio player. I downloaded the two highest rated audio player apps on the Play Store and the first one (Blackplayer paid version) wouldn't play the locally stored Dropbox mp3 files! It would stream the files that weren't downloaded, strangely enough, but any of the podcasts I had stored locally I would get a popup that said that the program couldn't play that file.

The second program I downloaded was the Pi Music Player. This one forced my device into Portrait orientation, which irritated me. When I clicked on the podcast mp3 (one of the locally downloaded ones) it acted like nothing was wrong and just sat there at 0:00 and never played the file.

Both of these apps had permissions to access local storage.

Sooo, TLDR, is there a music player out there that anyone can recommend? Thanks!

If it's for podcasts... I'd recommend pocketcasts. You won't need the Dropbox thing as pocketcasts can download the podcasts itself or stream them if you prefer. It's a really nice app and I can't say enough nice things about it.

If your podcast files are stored locally (on your phone) you should take a look at either MX Player or VLC. Both apps can handle a really wide range of media file formats and are continuously supported with feature updates. Currently I prefer MX Player because it's Settings menu has a more expansive number of options but from what you've written the user interface might be a priority for your needs. Take a look at the screenshots on their Google Play pages to see if either one will fit what you want (also note that absent in the screenshots that when you use the app, select your file, and then minimize it, there;s a still useful interface in you Notifications bar that does include the length and time remaining for the file currently playing.)
