looking to setup a wireless repeater/extender

i have a netgear cg3000d rg (wireless modem/router) from charter and i want to create an extended wireless network with my netgear wnr2000v3 (wireless router). i currently have them connected and i can get on the internet with the wireless router and i can connect to the wireless modem and get on the internet. the router has wireless repeating and wireless extender features along with access point features. what i want to do is connect them in a way that they operates as 1 device. so when i go to the one end of my house or the other i dont have to re-select my wireless network. is it possible? what are my best options?

Sounds like you want Repeater mode. You can try using the same SSID but I'm not sure how well that works in practice.

The other option is to use it as a Repeater bridge -- basically a different SSID. You could try flashing DDWRT or Tomato on the netgear wnr to get access to repeater and repeater bridge modes. I like Tomato better but DDWRT tends to have more features.

ok so i can do anything you need me to do on a computer but when it comes down to networking you can give me 2 computers and tell me to hook them together directly with an ethernet cable and i would find a way to screw it up a little more indepth please! ive atached a screenshot of my router page

am i even on the right screen? do i need to do anything to the cable modem?

I love Tomato firmware, I have it installed on my Asus RTN16.

Using tomato, there is an option to create a mini-mesh network, I found some instructions but I can't speak for them myself.

Looks like the right screen

Since your router has repeater mode then you could first try following any help docs that come with it about setting that up. Each router has very different names for the same things, it can get kinda confusing. To me I dont even know why there is a setting named "Repeater IP"

Anywho, I think you will want to enable static routes (but can leave the routes empty) and make use to turn off DHCP in the repeater. DHCP should be done by the main router. Also, be sure to use the same security mode such as (AES) WPA2-PSK or whatever. And same mode (b/g/n or mixed, etc).

You can try the different SSIDs, or the same SSIDs. Different SSIDs are usually more likely to work.

You can also try the same channel (1, 6 or 11 are usually best in the US) or try different channels.

Finally, make sure you set aside an afternoon to do this and that you know how to hard reset the router to factory defaults if something goes wrong. I went through many resets until my repeater worked correctly. I also had to sometimes give it extra time to "initialize". Play around with the settings, a lot of this is trial and error, but it comes eventually. I also grabbed a WiFi Analyzer app for my GNexus so I could see when/if things were working.
