Looking to switch to Verizon, can I buy my phone off Amazon?

Hello everyone. It is finally time to ditch AT&T's bullshit service and move back to Verizon. My mom and I are currently on a 2 person family plan and will be trying to have pretty much the same contract through Verizon. The only issue is that my mother wants the new iPhone 4s when it comes out. This is in issue because Amazon.com has Bionics for $129.99 w/ creation of a new contract. What I would like to do is initiate the contract and get my Bionic via Amazon, and create a 1 person plan in my name. Then I will transfer ownership of the account to my mom, and when the iPhone becomes available in her area, she can simply go into a Verizon store and buy the iPhone and convert our plan into a family plan. Will this idea work? This will allow me to get on Verizon ASAP and get my Bionic now, instead of waiting until she can get her hands on a new iPhone.

My other question is this: On Amazon it states that you cannot port over your phone # if you "live in a different metropolitan area than the one in which it was issued". The problem with this is I currently reside 250 miles down the road from where that number was issued, because I am in college. I would however want my Bionic shipped to this college address. Is there anyway I could get Amazon to port the # anyway, and if not, could I simply take it into the Verizon store once I receive the phone and have them port my old # from AT&T?

I think everything sounds about right as far as you starting a new contract. You can easily add lines and whatnot. However, if you are the primary account holder (which you would be since you're the only one on the plan) you would have to go in with her, add that extra line and, if you want, change the primary person on the account.

As far as your number porting issue, I don't really know. Best bet would be to call and ask I suppose. It's not as though you are in an uncommon situation and I'm sure they've dealt with something like this before. If you were buying through Wirefly, I'd tell you to ask right here because there is a Wirefly rep that is a member of this forum and is more than pleased to answer any questions.
 
I think when attending college, your legal address is your parents home. Not 100% sure of this but I believe it's true. Also, shipping addresses are often different from home addresses.
 
You should be able to port the number anyways. I've ported my number while living in another state and there was never any issues; you'll probably have to do it through Verizon though.
