Loose charger tip in LG X Charge

My friend's phone has a new charger but the tip doesn't fit right. It keeps going in and out of charging mode. I don't know how many chargers he has been through with this. I think leaning on it might have something to do with the problem. He wants to get a cheap replacement at a convenience store but I said that might damage the phone. The good news is he still has the original package and receipt and could maybe replace it for free. In an emergency, would it be possible to wrap the tip with tape and/or prop up the phone somehow? By the way, how do they get the cords wrapped up that tightly to fit in that little compartment in the package?

It's doing that again. It's gone from 37 to 33% plugged in, and we don't know how to fix it. Maybe tomorrow we'll have to get yet another charger or cord. This is getting old, but he can't really afford a new phone right now.

Well of course, the best answer is to send the phone in for professional repair but sometimes thats just not economically feasible, so forgive me if my suggestions are "make shift" and diy.
Sometimes, its just dirt/gunk in the usb phone port that needs to be cleaned out. I've found that the cheap plastic toothpicks from "Dollar Tree" work very well. They sell for $1.00 usd. They are very, very thin flat plastic toothpicks. I'll post a pic later on. You could also cut your own from thin clear plastic packaging.

He got a brand new charger but it doesn't seem to be working that well. Is the Qualcomm 3.0 the right kind for the LG X Charge? I suppose it could be the battery, which is probably nonreplaceable. If that's the case, would it be better to get another X Charge or a different phone entirely? He's kind of harsh on them. He's even talking about saving up (for years, I guess) and getting an Apple (I know, sacrilege).
