Lost sounds on SMS

Samsung Rugby - posting here because I suspect (speculate) this is an 'Andorid,' not 'Rugby' problem.
For the last two days, any SMS I receive does NOT trigger an audible notification. I get the text, but no sound. I get sounds when an alarm is triggered from my phone. I get alarms for incoming email.
I have rebooted. I have checked Settings>Sounds>Notifications. I have checked my profile manager (MyProfiles).
How do I get incoming SMS to give me an audible alarm?

Try switching the sound for your SMS alerts to another sound. Perhaps the sound file you have it set for is corrupted now - for some strange reason.

Tried that with 2 different tones. No help.
