Lost .wma support

kredka

Newbie
Hi everybody,
I have just signed in here because after last Marshmallow update (few days ago) my CAT S60 refuses to play .wma files. I have tried several apps but all of them seem to relay on built-in .wma codec (neither abMusic, Pulsar, Minima or Clean Music is now playing my .wma files). Does anyone know what can be done to fix it? Is it global problem - or maybe just my phone is no longer playing .wma music?

Hey I have the same problem too after the update. WMA music won't play on Google play music and also on the pi music player. I put in a service ticket with CAT so I'll post here what they say. I am able to play music on the MX player app that is for video files though, but that app isn't made for music so I don't have playlists or random song capability.

If it did support WMA and the update removed it, I suspect that either Cat and/or the phone's OEM had legal issues with Microsoft. IANAL but Windows Media is proprietary and patented, and any company who wishes to use it in a device must license it from Microsoft, and pay them lots of $$$. Android itself doesn't natively support WMA for this reason, however manufacturers may add it if they wish.

Try Rocket Player instead, that supports WMA no problem as it uses it's own codecs rather than whatever is in the phone's firmware. MX will play WMA as well, same with VLC.

AC3 is another patented codec that some device's stock players might not support, because of Dolby licensing. AC3 is often used in video files.

I have also put in service ticket and now they investigate it. They had already mailed me few times for further details but nothing important so far has happened. I'll try other apps.

I have completely forgotten about existence of VLC and even didn't though that there should be an Android version! Thanks a lot - that fully solves my problem. Nevertheless, I will check out what CAT is going to do with it, and post here when getting some important answer.
