M9 auto-brightness vs M8.

All: I just migrated to the M9 from the M8 and notice that "automatic brightness" is much dimmer on the M9. It was nagging me for a few days and I just did a side by side comparison to see if I was imagining it. I was not - the M9 is much dimmer when set to auto-brightness.

I contacted HTC via chat to ask them about it and got this ludicrous response that: "The M9 was designed to save energy , since We are HTC are concerned and committed with the environment."

It's entirely possibly that I have a bad display which is why I took the time to contract HTC. Then again, maybe it is by design. But it seems like a terrible move when Samsung just came out with the better display and better battery life (at least based on early reports). I love the M9 but for the rep to try to explain away what is either a defect or poor design choice as environmentalism is laughable.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else coming from the M8 noticed the same thing. If it's by design, fine; I can live with it. But I just want to ensure that I don't have a potentially defective display.

Addendum: it's not just auto-brightness. I just turned up the brightness on both devices to 100% and the M8 is considerably brighter. Does this sound like a defective display or is this by design?

Auto brightness seems to be a joke on most handsets I've had in the last 2 years or so.
If they'd allow for fine-tuning (attenuation),that would be the way to go.
Some ROMS have that baked-in,one of the reasons I like, more like need,to Root/ROM a device.
As for the M9,I agree, the Auto-Brightness is useless indoors & out.
I manually set mine at about 65% & that seems to be the sweet spot for most use scenarios, not gonna fiddle w/the setting all day fo the sake of a few minutes of battery savings.

Mine is plenty bright, even compared side by side w/the SamsungNote4.
I'd check out some demo sets in-store for comparison.....................................................

They're 2 different handsets so comparing brightness on one to the other might not be the best test.

Can you compare it to another M9? Do you have stores nearby that stock them to check? Comparing like for like would be a more definitive test.

Edit - Ninja'd by seconds!

That's what I was suggesting to OP,my comparison was just for general overall, ruling out a ridiculous contrast/deficiency in brightness.

[QUOTE="HenryKrinkle, post: 6942317 That's a fair point and I think that's what I will do. I just remember reading early reviews stating that the M9 was a slightly brighter display and didn't expect that it would go in the opposite direction. First world problems.[/QUOTE]

Not at all,you have a legit concern.
Mfgs & corps would love for all consumers to shrug off legit concerns w/that notion.
Please keep us posted on the outcome. :)

I think that's what annoyed me about the "environmentalism defense". I was having a perfectly agreeable chat with customer service, he couldn't come up with an answer, and essentially patted me on the head telling me is was for the planet. Thanks for all the responses. I love the device but don't want to start off with a dud.

When looking at the M9 vs m8 in brightness they seemed the same, but the color temperature was different. The M9 was noticeably warmer, which would make it seem darker than the m8.

The problem is every display is different, even across the same model. Best bet is to go into a store and compare and see if it is on par with other M9's.

I'm switching from a Samsung S3 and am actually hoping for a screen that will dim darker than the S3. At night, the S3 is always too bright, and I'm hoping for more turndown. Can anyone comment on the low end of the setting?

Obviously being bright enough to be visible in sunlight is also extremely important, but most of my time is (unfortunately) spent indoors, so brightness is much of a concern there.

You can use screen filter for that , I use "Night mode"on my ol' s3(it even shows screen burn ins LOL) , BTW if you are still not satisfied then you are looking at the wrong place ; AMOLED can go dimmer than a LCD
