Unlikely... as using a mac address as a security identifier is a really bad idea.. i can't imagine that whatsapp would use that.

(please tell me they don't)

MAC spoofing may be an issue regarding computers but the WhatsApp app on your Android phone uses your phone number and your phone's IMEI to authenticate your account.

I'm just going by documented references -- your phone number is what's used by WhatsApp as an identifier for you and your WhatsApp account, while a mix of IMEI (mobile devices) and/or MAC address (network chip) will be used as an identifier to your device. This more or less falls into place taking into consideration that logging into a single WhatsApp account isn't allowed with multiple phone numbers involved, or on different devices.

Please provide proof otherwise.

your phone number is what's used by WhatsApp
I personally know of an exception. When I originally attempted to set up WhatsApp, because my phone did not get a signal in my house, I couldn't use its number to receive the verification code. I used my landline's number, and received the code by voice.

(This led to a bewildering problem later, when I got a new phone, but that's a WHOLE other story!)
