Mail app help

Hello all! I just got my first smartphone today which is an htc desire running android (obviously). I have set up my mail app and I need some help. When I get a new email in gmail, an icon appears on the black bar on the top of the screen. This doesn't happen with my non gmail account and I was wondering if there was any way to change that. (Because I would like to know when I have new emails.)

On stock android you open the mail app and long-press the account. You will get a pop-up and tap account settings. Scroll down and make sure the notifications box is checked.

The Desire runs HTC Sense so your mail app may be a little different. If you can't find the setting, you should ask over in the HTC Desire section of the forums where other Desire owners hang out.
