Mail app marking emails on hotmail as read before being opened

I have recently got a new android phone and am trying to work out getting my emails from hotmail on my phone. I am using the built in 'mail' app but as soon as the emails are downloaded onto the phone they are marked as read on hotmail on the browser despite not even being opened. Can anyone help with this?
