Major newby problems compiling app

So, I am a complete newby here and I was able to get my mobile webview app compiled and installed. However, when I open the app on my android and proceed to login through the app, it consistently opens a web browser outside of the app..

You have a build dependency problem. Try changing the targetSdkVersion in your build.gradle. e.g.

android {
   compileSdkVersion 26

   defaultConfig {
       applicationId "bla.bla"
       minSdkVersion 21
       targetSdkVersion 26
   }
}

If that doesn't work, please post the contents of your build.gradle file, and possibly a link to your project on Github.
