Make screen not come on when I get texts

I'm on Note 8 with T-Mobile and am using the Messages app that comes with it.

I love getting the previews at the top and to be able to reply to them real quick is great, but the screen comes on all the time...Lol
Is it possible to get the notifications and make the screen not come on?

Don't know if it makes any difference but I'm not using any security features.
Meaning when I press the side button, double tap or hard press the middle button, I go directly into the phone.

Thanks

Disclaimer: I don't have this phone AND I'm still on Marshmallow stock on my main handset(ergo no plethora of advanced settings)...BUT... I've installed the new Google Messages app, which does exactly what you ask for "without any settings change!"
The first time you perform each of various different actions the system will reprompt you about making it default app, until eventually never.

PS I've also downloaded Google Duo, Contacts and Dialer apps(giving each access to everything and default status in phone Settings/Apps. This new ecosystem being much better than Android Stock, Carrier's or Manufacturer's.

Good luck.
