Make T-Mobile stop sending me text messages

John Jason

Android Enthusiast
I have a prepaid unlimited everything plan with T-Mobile ($70 for 30 days). Every week I get at least one, sometimes two text messages from T-Mobile. These annoy the hell out of me.

T-Mobile has an uncanny ability to send the text message when I am in the theater, in class, etc. Not only do I have to put up with my phone beeping at me for unwanted text messages, afterward I have to take the time to delete the message.

A few days ago I called T-Mobile and asked them to stop sending me text messages. The first representative I talked to said they could not be stopped. When I told her I would go to Verizon she suddenly decided that it could be done, but that it had to be done from tech support, and she transferred me. The lady in tech support said she could turn it off and said that she had done so. Two hours later I got another text message from T-Mobile advising me that they had new phones for my consideration. I ignored it, thinking that it might have been queued before the block went into effect.

Just now I refilled my account using my computer. Within 60 seconds after clicking the Confirm button my phone beeped that I had a text message. Sure enough, T-Mobile thoughtfully sent me a text message to inform me that I had just refilled my account. Like I didn't know. Duh! I called 611 and made my way to tech support. They confirmed the conversation of a few days ago, and that "advertising" text messages were set to be blocked. When I complained that I was still getting spam text messages from T-Mobile I was told that "most customers love the feature" and "it is for my security." I pointed out that if someone else pays my bill it's certainly OK with me, no need for security here.

I asked to speak to the supervisor, who only confirmed that they cannot block text messages from T-Mobile. I told him he had better figure out how to do it, or instead of losing 500,000 customers like they did last quarter they would lose 500,001. He said he was sorry if I felt the need to change from T-Mobile.

So is there a way to stop the spam from T-Mobile? Or do I have to go to Verizon? Or does Verizon do this too? Or Sprint? Or AT&T?

The only texts I get from T-Mobile are the "your bill is available" and "payment received" ones. If I'm not getting spam type messages from them there's no reason you also can't avoid them.

I'm not on a pre-paid account though...

If you don't want the text messages, you could always try a text blocking app and put the specific numbers in. I work for T-Mobile and have had a few customers complain about it.

Btw, if you don't ever hit the 5 gb of 4G, we're launching a $$60 everything plan with 2gb of 4g speed. Save ya $10 a month!

I'm prepay and the only messages I get are 3 days before my month is out to remind me to refill my account and a confirmation when I refill my account. The only other text I've ever gotten is a free $10 added to your account if you refill within a time frame which i did and another text saying the free $10 was added to my account. I was happy with that T-Mobile text. But thats it. They never bothered me to that amount.

Also yes, I did get text messages from Verizon, AT&T, Cricket and Virgin Mobile when I had them.
