Making a purchase decision: Android vs iPhone

Hey all. I know these are the Phandroid forums and many of you will kill anyone mentioning anything Apple, but I need help making a purchase decision.

For about 3 years now I've owned the Galaxy S Vibrant sgh-t959 since it released in 2010. I've since updated the OS to Froyo 2.2 and never rooted the phone. I have been a very happy owner. It is one of the best phones I've ever had despite some glitches. I've dropped it countless times (still worked), had water damage to it (still worked), lost it for 6 days (still had battery charge)...I will miss it dearly, but time has come for us to part.

Within the second year of owning the phone, the computer stopped recognizing the device as a Mass USB storage. I've downloaded Kies and tried updating the firmware. I've tried it on multiple computers that once recognized the phone, this includes many PC's and Mac's with different OS's. I've factory reset the darn thing and still no go. My sister and brother own the same phones and their phones have had the same issue over time. I suppose this is something that happens to that type of phone as it ages..?

My partner recently got the new iPhone 5. He's an Apple fan and had the very first iPhone 1st Gen for many years until he retired it and got the latest iPhone. To this day, his iPhone 1st Gen is still recognized by his old Macbook Pro and the late 2012 iMac with Lion, no trouble.

I REALLY REALLY want to get the newest Samsung Galaxy S4, but I'm afraid that overtime, the same USB issues will start cropping up when the phone begins aging. I'm sure you can do a lot of cool things by rooting the phone from the start, but I am not interested in rooting.

Is the USB issue an old Android OS bug that is now fixed on the latest phones or will it eventually happen again?

My partner makes strong arguments pro iPhone, but I want to hear what the Android community has to say, specifically about the Galaxy S4.

Thanks, :smokingsomb:
