Making A Theme?

Hey everyone.

Maybe someone can help me out with some information. I am a graphic designer who is interested in making themes for the Android OS. I have never done any kinds of designs for cell phones, however, I am great at icon designs and GUI designs.

Can anyone send me in the right path of how to make Android designs?

I'm not a programmer, but I think I've seen a collaboration area on Google. Since they make the Android OS, that seems like the best place to start.

Well there are many ways to theme easiest would be home replacements.... other option is root but either way most provide a bare template for you to modify and build to your own liking for free...

I just want to make a background, replace icons and other visual elements. I know there are some apps that allow me to change that but I am tired of apps crashing my comp. What I'd like to know is if there is some way to go deep into the OS and pull the folder where all visual elements are and edit them, like one would on a computer. Any help?

There are TONS of theme resourecs over on XDA-Developers, and the XDA Theme wiki.

I just did a search on how to design themes for aHome and it brought me to this. aHome themes will work on PandaHome and whatever other HomeReplacement apps support them.

I've been looking at creating a theme myself. However I find a lot of stuff over at XDA confusing. For example I don't know if when people are talking about themes for the G1 (which most stuff on that site seems to be?), if it's applicable to my phone as well? (Hero)
