Manage contacts through a PC or Mac application

I'm not aware of anything similar. If you're syncing contacts to Google/Exchange/etc you can edit them there. I thought that the HTC devices were also delivered with a sync app that might help in this regard. In general, wired sync really isn't a well-fleshed out area for Android as devices are mostly designed for wireless sync.

I'm sure it's not what you're looking for but GV will allow you to send/receive SMS from any internet-connected PC.
 
Yes, you can just use gMail on the PC/Mac to manage your contacts from the browser of your choice.

As for sending SMS, there are many free online services that allow you to do this. Many cellphone services have a way to do this (Sprint does, for example). Here's the first entry from a Google search ("Send SMS") that should allow you to send SMS: Send Free SMS Online - Free SMS.
You can also send SMS via Google Talk.

But since I have been using GMail for many years now, I have hundreds (if not thousands) of people in my Google contacts (mainly email of course). I'm a bit afraid to mix them up.

Regarding SMS, I am aware of those services. I meant to send an SMS through my phone (as if it were sent by the phone).

I used to be a Nokia fan and used PC Suite as you did. I used it to sync Outlook 2000 to whatever phone I had as I used Outlook as my contact manager. I've given up on a physical address book. Moving to Android (Desire HD) I saw that HTC Sync seemed to do the same thing but couldn't get it to work reliably. Then I found MyPhoneExplorer ( ... FJ Software Development ...) which allows me to sync all my contacts and calendar with my (local) PC.

It also lets you send texts but I don't use this function (I only send about 1 text per month ....).
