Please, could you rephrase the question?
If you want to have your contacts as a text file, you can use GMail to export your Contacts. Or are you have trouble syncing your GMail and your phone?

Download from or to? I had all my contacts in Outlook on my PC. I imported them into my Gmail account which then synced them to my Droid. That is only 1 scenario. Just what are you trying to do?
