Is there a way to manually backup? If it’s only able to backup automatically then what is the interval (when can I expect the next backup to occur)? I tried disabling then re-enabling ‘Back up my data’ but this did not force a backup.

That "backup" in settings is really only saving the list of apps you have installed and some of their settings. It doesn't actually save the data.

I keep contacts and photos sync'ed and any data i consider important is saved in the cloud, so the backup isn't that important to me. There are some decent backup apps, but the best ones require root to be able to backup everything.

If you let us know specifically what you want to backup, then maybe there are alternatives to rooting (which I wouldn't recommend anyway)
