Help Manually checking Gmail?

How can I shut off Gmail so it isn't checking for new emails all the time as I get about 40-50 a day. So, I know that is using battery. I'd like to just turn it on when I check Gmail ever few hours. Is that possible?

Try this it may work settings ➡ system update and unchecked auto updates
Like you said Firewill.
You can't easily manually check Gmail, so I did it this way.
Settings/Notification panel
Then moved the Sync icon to the top.
Now all I have to do is pull down my quick settings notification screen at the top of screen, then sync to manually check my Gmail. Or just click on the Gmail icon and at the top it says:
"Auto-sync is off. Touch to turn on". Then I swipe the top quick settings and turn sync off again. Works for me.
This will save me a lot of battery.
