Maps not showing street names

I've noticed that when I'm using maps to figure out walking directions, I can't see the names of streets. When I zoom in to try to see the street names, I still can't see them without moving the map. More businesses just show up. Why does maps prioritize showing me businesses instead of the street names themselves? It's incredibly frustrating! Is there any way around this?

I don't see that problem, all I see are street names once zoomed in far enough. Not many businesses show up and they are smaller than street names. I have Labs/big text checked if that makes a difference.
