Marshmallow update for deactivated phone

I have a VZW S5 that is not active on their service anymore after a device upgrade. It appears that VZ won't allow an OTA update over WiFi since the SIM is inactive (Message: Update service not available, try again later), so is there an alternate way to update the firmware?

Thanks for you insights.

Try sammobile and odin

If you are still with Verizon, swap sim cards and update then swap back.
That's an interesting thought. VZ normally registers the device along with the SIM presumably for CDMA support, but the SIM might do enough to let the phone authenticate with the update servers. Have you been able to do this successfully?
