Maximum charging power?

You'll be fine using either port, your S7 has a 3000 mAh battery so theoretically it will pull in up to 3 amps (1000 mA = 1 A). Even if you were to plug your S7 to some kind of regulated power source that's able to supply over (within practical limits) 3 amps it's still a matter of your phone will just pull in what it needs.
 
it would not matter if that Charging source were capable of 1 million Amps.....

the source has nothing to do with overcharging, that is all controlled by the "on board" phone's charging regulator circuits.

IF, though on the other side of the picture, the source is only capable of 0.5 amps.... it is quite probable that the phone might not ever get charged, or if it did, it would take a LOT of hours to do so....
 
The 2.4 amp port is preferable but the difference between the two is negligible. Basically it's not even a matter where your phone will be pulling in a full 2.4 amps the entire time it's charging anyway. It will peak early on and then the amount of current needed tapers off as it charges. Once it's close to 100 % it probably won't be taking in 100 mA or so.

At first turn on, when the battery is low, the Charging Regulator pushes the battery hard at the maximum that the source can provide "up to" what the regulator will allow.

but, once the battery reaches a certain level of charge, and in some cases this is determined by a "battery internal temperature sensor", the regulator will cut back the charging rate. as the voltage increases to near full charge, the rate is tapered back even more, to a small fraction of full rate.

and finally, if you leave it on the charger for a full year, it will drop back to a very tiny trickle of current, to just barely keep the battery topped off.

I am emphasizing the lengths of time grossly to indicate, you can't hurt the battery, it is all factory programmed to be automatic.
