Help maxx can't keep wifi connection

hello
before I send my maxx back to be replaced anyone have any suggestions for this-
I can't keep a wifi connection, it says connecting, obtaining ip address, connecting for a few seconds then disconnecting. Tried a factory reset that made no difference. Tried tinkering with settings on my router. My laptop and other mobiles work fine with my router. any suggestions please, alex

I had the exact problem with my maxx. After searching different forums for days, I finally was able to hit on something that actually worked... Apparently *MY* Razr Maxx can't handle AES encryption. Others have claimed that they use AES without issue, but AES was definitely the source of my problem.

I ended up setting my router to use WPA2-PSK with TKIP encryption and everything now connects flawlessly. My Razr also had a problem with plain WEP as well as WPA2-PSK Mixed-mode, so it's possible there are other issues. But my wife's maxx was exhibiting the exact same behavior, so I doubt my phone had a hardware defect.

Give it a shot and see what happens...

Hi Greg, thanks for reply, I think I've tried every possible option on my router to no avail, these are my options WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) WPA2-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 with Pre-Shared Key) Mixed WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK WPA-802.1x

In your router settings, when you chose wpa2-psk, you should have the option of picking the encryption type... TKIP or AES.

What type of router do you have?

OK. I looked at the manual for your router and it looks like the WPA-PSK uses TKIP by default. It doesn't show that the user can change these settings. It also doesn't talk about AES at all. How old is the router?

If setting the router to WPA-PSK doesn't fix it, then I'm not sure what to do. I don't want to say you need to buy a new router, but that may be the correct answer. Maybe make sure your current router's firmware is up to date...?

If you do get it working, please update this post with the steps required.

I was having an issue of the device cycling through 1x, wifi, the network extender, 4g, 3g etc, like my nexus did outside. Thus was eating my battery. I ended up flashing a new firmware to my router, rebooting it and looks like it may have solved the problem.

I had problems with my wifi at home until I switched to wps encryption which pairs the device with its own separate key instead of wpa/wpa2. Since then perfect all the time. See if you router supports wps encryption... it leaves all your other devices the same, just a special connection for the Maxx...

For what it's worth, I had a D-Link DIR615 and my wife and I both have the Maxx. For the last month(ish) it's been total hell trying to use wifi at home (but no problem elsewhere) for both of our phones (but both laptops were fine on it). I finally broke down and replaced the router with an Asus RTN12 (as recommended at my Micro Center) and lo and behold, I have wifi!!!!!

Wish I had the sources handy for this but I don't.. I did my research a few days ago and (sorry for being lazy) won't be retracing my steps :)

Much digging on my end led me down a fairly long rabbit hole, to discussions of the same issue with Xoom tablets. Going on the assumption that the same hardware and software is used to control the RAZR's WiFi, it appears the problem lies with backward support for *draft* 802.11n devices. Apparently when Motorola updated their software to be fully 802.11n compliant, some of the backwards compatibility to draft n routers was lost in the process. The result is exactly as you experienced (and exactly as I experience on draft n routers) - can't hold a connection for more than a few minutes at best before it drops and reconnects.

Hopefully they did something about this in the forthcoming ICS update... We'll see.

This problem is not dircted towards tthe maxx i bought the galaxy s2 and had it for a while then the same problem started occuing so i researched on this problem and its always about ipads and phones and anything portable so i lost my galaxy s 2 and got the s3 and the same thing started occuring and then i relized its not the phone so i researched it again and again there is no answer so i was reading a bunch of websites and all of the people keep saying there portable device is losing connection and tthe computers are fine so its not just your phone butt basically anything thats portable(not including the laptop) and im not saying its avery phone or whatever butt i seems only occuring in those devices so im guessing its the way the routers work just like what that guy said up in the colum its going to sleep with one eye open and u keep poking at the other eye its gonna open both 5-20 times
