There are a few cults still around who regularly predict the end of the world. Amazingly some adherents stick with them even after they've been proven wrong repeatedly.
I remember some nut using the web to spread the story that the comet that hit Jupiter a decade or two ago was going to create a flare that would destroy the Earth. There are probably people who claim every planetary conjunction signals the end.
And then there are those physicists who claim that the Sun will use up its store of hydrogen, start burning helium and swell into a red giant and fry the Earth. However they won't put a precise date on it or even tell us what year, just some vague, woolly prediction like "4.5-5.5 billion years' time", which is no good at all to any self-respecting prophet of doom.
