Mazeoid brings back a remake of the classic Pac-Man, and it does a pretty good job of it too! Mazeoid perfectly mimics the classic Pac-Man maze along with the ghosts and other features you come to expect with Pac-Man. If you are used to the traditional Pac-Man sounds (waca-waca-waca), Mazeoid is a little off. I do not know if this is due to any sort of copyrights on the sounds, but it definitely makes the experience a little different. Personally, the sounds of classic games are usually what make them as great as they are.

The overall game-play is rather solid. You have two options for moving your yellow friend throughout the maze, through swiping on the screen or using the trackball (Nexus One). I find using the trackball is the most efficient way to play as you are not blocking part of the screen with your hand while swiping to move.

Options to customize your experience are very limited. There is no options menu to change any particular settings. The only true option you have to enable/disable is the sound. There is an icon conveniently placed in the top right corner allowing you to enable/disable the sound. Customization and options are where this game lacks and may cause people to pass. The biggest problem with the game as it stands is the inability to save game progress. You are able to pause the game, however when you leave the application, you lose your current game state. There is also no option to save. The only way to hold game-play is to pause your current game while staying within the application itself. It’s a very unfortunate feature to be lacking.

Overall, Mazeoid fills a need for those Pac-Man fans. While it is lacking in some aspects, the overall experience is rewarding and enjoyable. With updates to come in the future, I am confident that the ability to save the game-state will come. Give it some time, polish your skills, and take it back to when games were real!
