media apps fail when usb drives are removed.

I'm running stickmount to mount my usb HD for music. If I need to eject the drive, I must pause the music or the media app freaks out. This makes sense and for good reason. So what I do is pause then eject. Now when I plug my drive back in ( wait a few ) its found and remounted. Now I hit un pause and nothing. Each media app I try fails in one way or another, they just can not resume.

Further, I can not find an app that will auto pause. I tried auto-mate-it and there is simply no way to pause media. I can detect usb power cable unplugged and this works great because the usb HD requires power but not pause as there is no option to do that in auto-mate-it.

So I'm after a solution for both issue, any ideas?

I don't know what device you are using.

On my Droid Maxx running 4.4.4 I go to ...
Settings | Storage
... and scroll to the bottom. There I select ...
Unmount USB Disk
... when it completes I disconnect.
