Media player with SMB/FTP support

patter

Newbie
I keep all my mp3 & ogg music on a home fileserver that I can connect to via FTP and SMB (as a windows share). Are there any android media players which can play files (and especially directories of files) from lan fileshares?

i've been wanting the same thing. better yet, a file explorer that allows me to select which media player i want to use depending on file type.

my 3 year old archos 605 (linux) wifi can play files over smb, don't see why an android device could not do the same.

I guess that's a no?

This thread is 3 months old - has anything shown up?

I used to have a server-side php script that handled playlists, and there must be an http-streaming android player, so that would work... but I really want to just play off my windows file shares.

I saw a tip for playing a .avi file on a network share.
With CifsManager the Desire accesses an .avi file on the share and plays it with RockPlayer.
It's only an example for general media playing on network shares with CifsManager.
And Rockplayer stands for every media player.

But ... CifsManager needs root :(
So I didn't try it.

So when I root my phone, can I mount an smb share to /mnt/smb or something? and when I do that can I click on an avi in that mounted share from a file explorer and play it in any media player?

You'll also need a kernel with CIFS enabled. CM7 does.

I use CM7, CIFS Manager and MoboPlayer. I can play anything MoboPlayer can handle on my network but it's temperamental. If I skip ahead it freezes.
