Media Scanning again and again and again

I have searched and searched and tried everything I can find, but still no go.

The issue? The media scanning slowing things down, stopping me from doing things until it is completed. Repeatedly. Every few minutes.

I have reset, reformatted, reloaded everything I can find.

I don't add or remove media often enough to require this incessant intrusion. I have even removed my external SD card with nearly 2,000 songs on it to minimize the interruption. I miss my music.

Does anyone have an app, a plugin, an idea (ANYTHING!) that will let me control this? Ideally, to allow me to say when I want it done, like perhaps ONLY on boot or when I force it?

I am even willing to try rooting, if that would work, though I have real concerns about bricking my phone.

DEVELOPERS!

I would pay a reasonable price for an app, and I don't think I'm the only one. Think about it.

Is it still repeatedly scanning even with the SD removed? If it's only scanning with the SD inserted, then I'd suspect a problem with the SD card. Normally it should only scan for media when something has changed.

It still scans without the SD card. It has only the phone's storage to deal with, so it's over relatively quickly, but it is still annoying and unnecessary.

Okay, now I wonder if the internal storage has gone bad or unstable. Because there's definitely something happening that's causing it to scan repeatedly. If it is internal storage gone bad, you'll likely have to get a new phone. The internal is flash memory, just like an SD, and will eventually wear out. How long have you had the phone? Pretty sure that just installing an app won't stop it.

Not really sure about when I got the phone. No more than two years.

Can some sort of test be performed?

There probably is an app that can test the memory, but it will more than likely need root access. What's likely doing the scanning is the media player, you could probably disable in settings, and try a different media player perhaps. However if there is an underlying issue with the internal storage, it will still have problems. What I think is happening the storage may not be totally reliable and errors are occurring, and so the media scanner keeps on thinking the library has changed.

I am unbelievably happy to report that disabling the built-in Music Player took care of the problem. It now scans only on startup and when I run the app I got to force it.

Many thanks for the suggestion.

media scanner going into an infinite loop is often the sign of a failing SD card slot or a bad SD Card. it can sometimes cause the phone to freeze up or not respond to touch (a good example is the Samsung Galaxy S3 showing the lock screen, clock and everything works but it won't respond to touch for a few seconds.)

Battery stats will also have 'media server' showing in the top of the list. music playback off SD can also get choppy or cut in/out as well.
