MeeGo Does it Have Any Hope

MeeGo a Linux based platform recently created by Nokia, Intel, and The Linux foundation link to the project here MeeGo.
Essentially it a Linux distribution that can run on multiple hardware platforms Smartphones, Netbooks, Gps units, and connected TV's. Programing is done by the qt framework. Some things it needs to succeed because many platforms have come and gone uiq, WebOs, Windows Mobile and others. What in my opinion the platform needs to succeed.

  • Developer interest- Why do we need yet another platform? We already have so many Linux based platforms. Why do developers need to create applications for MeeGo?
  • OEM Interest- Why should OEMS create devices running MeeGo?
  • Future- Does MeeGo really have a future in the marketplace?
  • Network Operator Interest- Why Would carriers want to sell flagship devices with MeeGo?
  • Marketing- Will there be good marketing for MeeGo devices?
  • Selling Point- What would be considered a killer feature? Example Android had intrgration with Google services, Apple has there ecosystem, Blackberry has email and messaging, and WebOs (yah it still exists) excellent multitasking and notifications.
I just named many of the reasons why platforms have failed in the past. Will be able to avoid those or will end up being just another dead platform? Theses questions can have any answers.

This might end up like WebOs where they have an excellent os but performs poorly as a platform and falls hard on its head. If MeeGo manages to avoid the things that made WebOs unsuccessful such as poor marketing, lack of carrier interest, lack of developer support, and poor hardware unsuccessful then it shouldn't perform too poorly in the marketplace.

not really - bada is way proprietary, android runs on a vm and then there's webos... but meego will likely (based on previous maemo) be much more open

nokia will be leading the way with that one

Future- Does MeeGo really have a future in the marketplace?
likely not a huge one - it is targeted at the very high-end, but sure, why not?

Network Operator Interest- Why Would carriers want to sell flagship devices with MeeGo?
who cares. people in the civilized world don't buy phones from carriers

Marketing- Will there be good marketing for MeeGo devices?
again, that's up to nokia

Selling Point- What would be considered a killer feature? Example Android had intrgration with Google services, Apple has there ecosystem, Blackberry has email and messaging, and WebOs (yah it still exists) excellent multitasking and notifications.
meego will also have excellent multitasking (again, look at the older maemo)
probably the biggest point for a lot of people will be about your first point - meego's relationship with linux

like i've mentioned a couple of times, the whole penguiness of it all will attract a lot of devs, not to mention qt
carrier interest is pretty insignificant outside the states
hardware will quite definitely be better than webos had - nokia's track record is quite solid
marketing (and targeting - it is for the high-end) is something that remains to be seen
