Apps Memory Management

I couldn't really find a good subforum for this so it might be a little out of place, but I've been wondering how android os manages minimized programs. Do they stay open until you force close them, or does it close them automatically after a certain amount of time. Can we add/alter this timeout?

I really hope it's not up soley to the user to monitor and close open apps :-/

Turns out this isnt much of an issue because of the way the OS handles multitasking. when something is minimized its basically put to sleep in memory and doesnt use any cpu until called. the os performs garbage collection as space is needed.
