Help Memory (RAM) questions - new to ZTE Blade :)

Hi All

I'm a complete newbie to smart phones and suchlike, and have just purchased a ZTE Blade (not SF). I'm really trying to wrap my head round the whole ROM/RAM scenario, probably something i should have done prior to purchasing the phone!

I'm sure there have been multiple questions relating to this in the past but i can't find anything that quite answers my query on the forum, so sorry for boring you all with really basic stuff :-/

My questions relates to the 'System Total memory' in the 'Task Manager.' I seem to have only 166.37 (system total) which seems....well.....pretty low. Having read a few posts relating to 256MB/512MB RAM, i'm assuming i have the 256MB version?! But i seem to be 100MB short of that! (i assume this cannot be a good thing!)

I have absolutely no clue about re-installing software/flashing/rooting, etc, but just wondered if;

a) i'm stuck permanently with the 'system total memory' i have?
b) will this cause me any major issues considering i'm a new user and probably won't be using the phone to it's full potential?

I think the phone is a chinese version (came in a ZTE Blade box)
Its model number is ZTE-BLade
Android Version says 2.2.2
Baseband cersion says P729B01
Build number says ZTE-BLADE1.0.0B01

Again, apologies for this basic stuff, i'd really appreciate anybody's opinions.

Thankyou

Hey :) Sorry that no-one has replied to you yet.

Briefly, I wouldn't worry too much about the RAM. I know there is a fairly small amount on the phone, but the way that Android handles RAM usage you will be ok :) When your RAM begins to run out, the OS will automatically start killing processes that are not needed at the time. Despite my Galaxy S3 having 1GB of RAM, I actually only have about 150 MB free. This is because the core processes and the apps you run are still 'open' and running in the background so that they load quicker when you go to re-open them. However the phone will run as normal as if you had all your RAM free.

Do you find that it gets slow after a while of using it? If so, you can go to Settings > Applications and stop individual apps that are running in order to free up a little bit of space. I would advise you not to use a task killer from the play store, as they do more harm than good!

Hey CDPlant!

Thanks very much for your reply, appreciate it :-) your comments reference the RAM make for interesting reading , I guess there's not much I can do about upgrading it (unless i change the phone)! Wow, so only 150MB left from 1GB! Mind, i'm guessing your phone is more than capable of running many times the number of apps concurrently! That is re-assuring to know though, as I had thought there was an issue with it :-/

It does indeed get a bit on the slow side under use, I can't really envisage a huge amount of internet browsing as it's pretty laborious even searching for stuff on google! It seems just about ok running Internet apps, ebay, google maps, etc, but i try not to do too much at the same time. Killing things in Task Manager and shutting down Running Processes as you've suggested helps, although I guess only until i start opening things up again :-)

Thanks again :-) Maybe i'll just have to upgrade to a Galaxy S3 :-p
