Message App for Tablet only

Message App for Tablet with no corresponding cell phone: purchased a Galxy Tab A for 88 year old grandmother for games and text messages/photos. Is there a way to have a free standing message app not connected to another android device such as phone? She doesn’t have smart phone.

There are some: Facebook Messenger is an obvious one, Skype can send messages, and I'm sure a web search will turn up others.

But an internet messaging app will only let you message other people using the same app - it's not the same as SMS which work to any mobile phone.

Some message services, such as Telegram, require a phone number but it wouldn't have to be a smart phone (a dumb mobile phone would do for verification).

In addition to @Hadron's excellent advice, WhatsApp may be a good choice. Although its verification process will request a phone number, a landline will work. Instead of them sending your smartphone a code via SMS, they'll voice call the landline and speak the code, which you can then manually enter into its app.

It depends on who she wants to talk to, if that person uses for example, Viber, then she has to install Viber.

LINE can be used without a phone number, using only your email or Facebook account.
