Help message notifications

I am using Android 9 on an Ulefone Armor 6s, running Nova Launcher. Anyhow, my question is this....when no apps are open and I get a text message, my phone chimes the notification sound. When the message app is open and I get a new message, it just vibrates - causing me to miss messages. Can I change this so I always get a notification sound?

Yes install a different messaging app, such as textra in the play store. In it's settings you can configure that

Yes. You're using a higher Android version than I am, so your path may vary--but it should be similar to mine:

Start by going into System Settings and find its Notifications entry. Open it, find Messages, open it:

Adjust any settings you find there, then press 'Additional settings in app:'

Again, yours might look different, but go to its Notifications:

and adjust its settings there. Hopefully, that'll do it!

I think that is how my phone is too. But I do not do sound.

Many message apps have options within the app's settings to choose whether to make a sound when you are in a conversation or not. The idea is that when you are already in the conversation it's annoying to have it make a sound each time you get a message.

If your app doesn't have such a setting, use another app. But in my experience most do have it in their settings.
