Message too large error with the built in camera.

When I take a picture with the built in camera in the messages app it still says the image is too large. What is going on here? I have AT&T by the way.

Which "messages app"? If you're sending MMS, picture attachments can only be quite small, maybe 150-600k, all depending on what AT&T has set. And the default pictures from the camera might be 3-4MB, so you'll likely need to reduce them if you wish to send MMS.

Depends on the phone you have, but it just seems your messaging app is not downscaling the photo to MMS size automatically (reduced quality) to send it via text. I hear TMobile has RCS already running, so it won't be a problem for them, but it seems ATT is still using MMS.

It's the stock messages app on my Google pixel 2 XL. The problem that I have with that is I'm using the camera that's built into the messages app it should automatically take pictures at a size that I can send.

It sounds like it isn't. I don't know the Pixel 2 XL and have never seen one, but is there anything in the message app settings about maximum size of attachments? FWIW I have a Huawei Mate 10 and it knows that China Unicom only allows 600kb maximum for MMSs.
