Help Messages sometimes don't send

Fenwick

Lurker
For weeks now when I try to send a message most times it sends fine but every now and then the message won't send. I'll get a note saying message not sent. When I retry I'll sometimes need 3 or 4 efforts to get it to go. This is with both hangouts and the built in messaging app. Sometimes rebooting helps. Fido thought it was my Sim card but a new one didn't help. It doesn't matter if it's on WiFi or data. I'm wondering if it's a hardware issue? Please help.

When you say "wifi or data" what sort of message is this? SMS don't require WiFi or data, so I assume it's something else.

Is this to a specific recipient, or random? If it is random and you are using SMS (so WiFi/data are irrelevant) I would add Fido's system to the list of suspects. Phone hardware seems unlikely, has anything changes with the software?

The are Sms messages I'm talking about. By WiFi or data I meant that the problem was occurring in both settings where my WiFi was connected and where it wasn't. I wrote that because I've been wondering if that could somehow be related. Particulalry since I sometimes use Hangouts to have chats using the Internet with my friends. I wondered if the wires were somehow getting crossed because I think that happened to me with an iPhone in the past.

I don't think Fido is the problem because my wife is also on the same network and never has this problem at home where I often have it. She has an iPhone.

This happens to random recipients and it's been going on for months so it's hard to know what software change could have caused it. It could have started when I updated my android software but when I try to update to a newer version I get an error that says "cannot update your device has been modified."

Thanks for your help.

Has your device been modified (e.g. rooted, custom recovery installed)? That's what that message normally means.

It is a puzzle. Intermittent faults are definitely a pain to diagnose. If it's common enough (e.g. something you see every day or two) then if you had another handset you could stick your SIM in for a couple of days that would at least determine whether it was something to do with the particular phone.

If you tell us what phone, what software version, we can see whether people in the forum for that device have had any similar experience.

It happens most days but I don't have another phone. I think I might try wiping it clean and starting fresh. See if that helps. It's a Samsung S4. Running 4.4.2 thanks again for your help.

Hmm, if this was widespread I think we'd have heard, given how many S4s there are out there.

I can move this over to the S4 forum if you want though?

Haha. This means I get to buy a new phone! Thanks. I'm the mean time I'm going to try a restore. Appreciate your help.
