Messaging app background data

My mom has a moto g with verizon allset. Since she rarely uses her phone away from wifi at home, I thought the included 500mb of data would be fine for her. Today she ran out of data, and the majority of it is background data for the messaging app. She's been sending a lot of MMS but they are unlimited. I have apps set to only update over wifi so what could be causing this?

Is she using the stock messaging app or third party such as go sms, hangouts, and i even think the verizon messaging is third party.

She's using the stock Android messaging app.

I haven't used it in a while but the Verizon Messenger app should use wifi and actually is pretty nice.
