messaging app - no notification badge

i searched for a thread like this and didn't find one, but if i'm being redundant, please point me to any other relevant thread. i also googled for help and didn't find anything beyond the normal suggestions.

i don't seem to get getting badge counters anymore with messaging notifications. i still get notification, just no badge. i'm a fan of the badges and would like to get this fixed. this started first with messages from my dad who also uses an android phone and stock messaging app and today it also happened with an automated message from Sam's club. however, it did not happen with a friend using a samsung device.

i force-stopped the messaging app, cleared the cache, and rebooted the phone, but still having the same issue.

i'm using the stock messaging app on the s8 with AT&T and NovaLauncher.

any suggestions?

There is some glitch in the way the battery monitoring and message coexist.
Try the following:
Settings>Device Maintenance>Battery> Unmonitored App> add the message app.

I had a similar issue, this action resolved it.

good suggestion. i checked and found that oddly, the messaging app is not available to add to the unmonitored section. it appears that email is also not a candidate for the unmonitored status. i do have these apps already in that section/category: business calendar, google hangouts, line, nova launcher, nova launcher prime, macrodroid, skype, and tesla unread.

is there a way to add system apps to unmonitored? or, maybe there is a communication-related support app that i could add to unmonitored? i don't want to turn monitoring off altogether.

Check the notification badges in Mova settings.

another excellent suggestion. i had not checked there since i installed it... looks like my settings are for small, upper right corner, classic red numeric badge. i'm also using tesla unread, and have switched it on for email, hangouts, line, messages, phone, skype, visual voicemail, and words with friends. i deselected messages and rebooted; then, reselected messages and rebooted again.

i just sent myself a text using email (phone number @ mms.att.net) and it triggered a badge. hopefully this means it is fixed!
