messaging app unread count will not reset

The unread count will not reset for a specific thread. That is, the Messaging icon shows a '1' even though I have read the message numerous times. How can I reset that value?

Some background:

• I was vacationing in Taiwan and this particular message came while I was on my flight returning to home in USA, with the phone powered off. I did not get the message until I turned the phone on again.
• The message was for four people.
• The messaging app behaved slightly differently while I was in Taiwan, as follows:

1. For example, if Bill sends a message to the four people, the messaging app highlights the thread I have for only the Bill and I.
2. When I open the highlighted thread, the app then realizes it was intended for multiple people and opens that other thread instead, with the new message appearing there.

• It is the thread with only Bill and I that is highlighted in the list of threads.
