Messaging Notification Help

m6b

Lurker
I have a contact that does not have a phone number. I receive text message alerts from this contact and they are urgent when I receive them. I need to assign a distinctive alert tone for this contact, but I cannot figure out how to do it. I was able to do this on my older Samsung S4. I have tried to search online for help but am unable to find any help.
I have Zedge and Ringo(Lite) that was on my older phone. Zedge has been no help to me and Ringo requires the contact to have a phone number.
Can anyone help?

it will either have to have a bonifide telco number, or it will have to have a shortcut identifier...

is this person using a web based SMS application? if so, that can be harder but not impossible, we need a screen shot of the incoming message alert.

Verizon and my dentist both send me alerts, both always have an identifier and it is always the same every time they send an alert.

use that identifier number as the telco number for your contact

I just now, on my S5, created a brand new contact and named it JUNK.

I left the phone number vacant and it still allowed me to assign a special ringtone for it.

to continue doing what you are asking, I went to this weblink
http://www.onlinetextmessage.com/send.php

sent myself a message twice.
1st to get an identifier, once I had that, Textra settings let me pick out a unique ring tone for that ID.
Then I sent a 2nd message from that weblink, and the phone played the new tone just like I expected it too.

You MUST be at the "list of incoming messages"
You then Long Press the message identifier,
You then go to Settings,
then you select the ringtone, Zedge worked for me, the default tones worked, it also let me use E.S. File Explorer to find a special music file to choose from.

Hey thanks for the reply. The text is sent out by our police/fire dispatch. I am assuming it's computer generated. Everyone receives the text at the same time. It's to notify the SWAT team of a callout.

yes, it will be computer generated. My 911 support days give me the knowledge to state "almost 100% sure) that all the dispatcher had to do was pull down a window to select "On Duty Tech" and press SEND. We peons were tasked to carry our pagers into the shower (well almost, but on the shelf next to the shower).

Thank you for doing your job, and you are another Public Service buddy.....
I retired from the Communications 911 Support division of Phoenix Fire.
We too back in archaic times received alerts on our old Motorola pagers....
If you did not reply to that page in 5 minutes, a sheriff officer was on your doorstep. we were tasked to have the problem resolved within 120 minutes of the "Dispatcher's receipt of complaint".... that made it mandatory that everyone involved in the chain of command forward the complaint to us peons who were to fix it "right now"

this is on the right front of my bomber jacket...

My best motorcycle riding buddy is a retired SWAT officer who has run down more drug busts than he cares to remember.

I have been busy and have not been able to try anything else with my phone. However, I probably didn't state everything as accurately as I should have.
Zedge will allow me to assign a custom ringtone, however, with that contact, I don't receive calls, just texts. It will not allow me to assign a custom message notification. I don't know if that makes it any clearer or will help in finding a solution.

I should have explained that you do NOT need a contact to get notification tones on SMS.

With the list of SMS messages showing, Long Press the message indicator for the Alert, then choose settings, then tones. that is all you need to do.

Maybe the particular SMS app you are using does not support that feature.

Please install Textra to try out what I described. That is the SMS app that I used to explain the above.

* Textra SMS - Android Apps on Google Play

Set Textra as the Default SMS app.

You can change defaults at any time, it is not permanent.

Thanks again for your help!
I installed Textra and set it up like you suggested. We have training coming up and always receive a text a day or two before the actual training day. I will let you know how it went.
